Eaglenook Resort – 2023

June 29 – July 2, 2023

Our trip to Eaglenook this year was going to be special and memorable regardless of the fishing success. It was my dad’s 60th birthday present to come enjoy one of our favourite places and actually take a vacation for the first time in his life. From the moment we walked through the resort doors last year we knew my dad would fall in love and we needed to find a way to make that trip happen. It was a long trip for for him and his wife to make it happen but I’m sure they will tell you over and over again that it was worth it.

Thankfully Highway 4 was open single lane for our trip and the timing was perfect as our direction of traffic was just being let through as we pulled up. Now arriving at China Creek Campground they now have dedicated Eaglenook Guest Parking. While you still have to go in and pay for parking, the process is much more clear and efficient.

This year we opted for the charter package for fishing and left our own boat at home. Vacation for me and more meat on the deck. Win win.

We took the Eaglenook Water Taxi to the resort which was about an hour ride. The views were stunning especially with the water colour right now. When we arrived we were greeted immediately and told to leave our bags as we will find them in our rooms later. When you arrive on a Thursday you get to go have an evening fish to make the most of your trip. We quickly grabbed a snack and what we needed for the boat and got back to the dock. Our amazing guide Trevor was there and ready for us.

I’m sure I could have just left my dad at the dock and he still would have had the time of his life. From gawking at how clean the boats were to just taking in the view, he was in his element. But, we decided to take him out. 😀 That evening fish was amazing. Stepmom Marina landed the first fish and the biggest weighing in at 16.4 lbs. Fishing was slow that evening but we went back to the dock with two beautiful salmon and rushed inside for our first fantastic 3 course dinner.

5am comes quickly but as soon as you are on the water you remember why you do it. Our trip had high winds in the forecast so we decided to head offshore for our halibut during the short window of calm. Trevor took us out to his spot about 20 miles offshore and got the lines down as quickly as possible. Not knowing how well everyone would do on the sea sickness scale we wanted to limit out and get back to calmer water. Thankfully we did just that. A boat deck full of Hali and no pukers!

Dinner every night was amazing thanks to Chef James and his kitchen team. Everything is so full of flavour and just purely delicious.

With full bellies and a full day fishing, bedtime comes early. Before you know it it’s 5am and you’re excited for what the next day brings.

What to pack:
  • Bathing suit for the hot tub. Make sure you ask the girls to turn it on 1 hour before you plan to use it. It heats by propane and takes time to warm. Good news though is it lasts for 6 hours once on.
  • Layers. You can start the morning in pants and a hoodie but by the afternoon be in shorts and a tee. Don’t worry about rain gear as the Lodge has high quality boots, pants, and jackets for your use. I suggest grabbing a set that fits when you arrive and then just keeping it for your stay.
  • Drinks. Most of the resort is actually licensed but if you want drinks on the boat or in your room I suggest bringing a cooler with what you like. You can order beer and a small selection of ciders for your boat days but I suggest bringing your own if you have specifics you prefer.
  • A good camera! The wildlife is so amazing and worth a good quality lens if you have access to one.

See you next year!
